Impressions of the Big Thicket: "I went off some distance and started two watercolors. When I returned it was practically dark...Lance was explaining the sounds and approaching night. He related each sound to a specific insect or animal and told something of interest about each one. As he did this, I began to 'see' into the forest even though it was dark. The Thicket began to open up and take on a life of its own. Later on Lance identified smells and tastes in the same manner. He loved the Thicket with all of his senses."
Impressions of the Texas Panhandle: "The fragile sunrises and flaring sunsets [of the Texas Panhandle] seem more majestic. The sudden severe summer storms are more dramatic. The blizzards are fiercer, the wind blows harder. Elemental forces are closer. The harsh, unrelenting spirit of the land is revealed. Sometimes the cataclysmic violence of the area inspires an awesome humility."
Watercolors of the Rio Grande: "It is exceeded in length only by the Mississippi-Missouri system in North America. I have camped and painted on its banks from the headwaters to the mouth. I have swum and canoed in it and have explored not only its well-known areas but also those parts that are almost inaccessible. Some of my fascination with and awe of the Rio Grande is, I hope, expressed in these watercolor paintings."
